Sam Calagione – Dogfish Head Brewery
In the fall of 2010 we worked with Bicycling Magazine on a project that involved one of my favorite things besides photography – beer. We photographed Sam Calagione, the founder and owner of Dogfish Head brewery, one of the breweries that led the charge in the craft brew movement. It turns out, Sam is also cyclist, riding every morning at Henlopen State Park down in Delaware. You can check out Bicycling’s interview with Sam here.

Dogfish Head opened in 1995 as a brewpub, expanding their operation almost immediately thereafter, and in 2002 moving the entire operation to a 100,000 square foot brewery which was in the process of being expanded when we worked with Sam last year. Aside from biking and brewing, Sam and Dogfish were the subject of a Discovery Channel reality show, Brew Masters.

Kinda like my job, traveling all around the world and brewing crazy off-centered ales certainly isn’t a bad gig. For the record, Sam is one of the most authentic people I’ve ever met. I’m a fan.

This is really beautiful stuff. Years ago when I was in a band I played at the brew pub. I’ve loved their beer since.
Chris, really enjoy the way you bring such great character to a shoot. Working in the fluorescent lights is a pretty cool touch too.
