The Great Cupcake Wars

Who doesn’t love a cupcake? Little did we know that the tiny baked goods can be some serious business and serious competition. After photographing two cupcake bakeries in Washington DC for Inc. Magazine, we got a much better idea of the big business behind such small cakes.

Make sure to read about The Great Cupcake Wars on Inc’s website and to check out more photos from the shoot below.

We were up early to get to our first location, Georgetown Cupcake to photograph Katherine and Sophie, the founders and stars of the show DC Cupcakes on TLC.

Even though their bakery sells over 10,000 cupcakes a day, they were gracious enough to make some time for us to shoot a few photos.

As you can see in this outtake, they were busy icing and decorating even while we photographed them. Luckily no one was injured or covered in icing during the course of the shoot.

Cupcakes on the other hand – let’s just say when we wrapped our first shoot before 9:00am, we were already on a pretty significant sugar high. But when they look that good (and taste even better), how can you resist?

Our second spot was Sticky Fingers Bakery, a 100% vegan bakery and cafe – the brainchild of Doron Petersan, who was kind enough to not only pose for photos, but also to let us sample some of her delicious and vegan baked goods.

A word of congratulations are definitely in order for Doron, who recently won Cupcake Wars on the Food Network!

If you’re ever down in DC and craving something baked and delicious, make sure to stop by Georgetown Cupcakes or Sticky Fingers Bakery. You can’t go wrong with either choice.
