David Karp in Wired Germany
Taumelnd An Die Spitze
We had a pretty cool package arrive at the studio from across the pond this morning. When we learned that Wired Germany would be running a few images from our shoot with David Karp, founder and CEO of Tumblr, we were excited but didn’t know what to expect. Would it be the same article that ran in the UK edition, or something new entirely? Keep reading to find out and see a few more photos of our shoot…

Any German friends out there care to translate for us?

This is our first time showing this photo of David Karp – it might be hard to believe, but we managed to fit in a studio shoot in the middle of our crazy shoot day back in December of last year.

It’s awesome to see different editions of Wired run different designs and layouts using the images from our shoot.

Here’s that same shot for another view – if you look closely, you’ll even see Chris rocking his cowboy boots.

Awesome work man!! I Had a question on how you make your shadows so soft like the picture of daves face. the lines aer very soft. can you explain a bit?
Very cool. What I like the most is the simplicity of the image. It works!
Thank you Rick!
Hey Dave – it’s all in the lighting. If you look at the behind the scenes shot, you’ll notice that the two octabanks we are using are parallel to his face. This keeps the light very even and helps soften and reduce the shadows. Hope this helps.
Awesome Work I always wondered would you get the same effect with a square softbox? Why does Chris use octobanks?
The effect is similar with a regular softbox. We use octabanks because of that soft quality of light they produce.
I agree I love the look they provide. It looks like you use the 5 foot box do you? are they the ones with silver interior or white?

Lennart, thanks for the translation!
Robert did David really sit on the edge of that building or was there some retouching on that?
