March, 2012 Monthly archive

With the month of March coming to an end, we were shooting in Philly and NYC all week. A local editorial shoot Tuesday morning got us ready to go for an advertising gig at Picture Ray Studio up in Manhattan. We might have even found time in there to score a brand new camera.

We’re going all the way back to 2006 to bring you our latest post from the Archive. Chris’s shoot with Regina Spektor is an interesting story about shooting in the music industry, working with celebrities, and what you can do when technology just works against you. Keep reading to hear Chris tell the story of his shoot with this indie songwriter…

There are some of truly creative people in this industry. Let’s face it, you’ve got to be constantly concepting, developing, and executing or you get left in the dust. I’m fortunate to work with some really dynamic and inspiring people, ranging from art directors, to producers, to creative directors, photo editors, art buyers, and print producers. Instead of questions about email blasts, printed promos, and portfolio reviews, I think that it’s time that I put some of them on the spot to show us their meaning of Life. “The meaning of Life” may be a little far flung to answer in only ten questions, but hopefully these interviews will serve to distill some of the inspired and intellectual energy of the creatives that we work with.

In June of 2011, while Chris and I were shooting in LA, we grabbed dinner and a few beers with Dave Hill. Aside from letting us in on a secret and surreal spot to shoot landscapes out in the desert, we spent the evening talking about making pictures, the business of making pictures, and the industry we’re a part of. After we left the west coast, we knew Dave had to explain the meaning of life. I’ll let him tell the rest…

Whew, what a week – a week full of traveling and making pictures. After having a day to prep and enjoy the early spring weather in Philadelphia, Chris and I took off to Colorado for an editorial shoot. We flew into Denver and headed west out into the wild to find and photograph our subject (you can see the amazing view they had in the shot above).

After a few crazy long days in Colorado, we were back on the east coast, stopping in Philly for a second to reload our gear and then headed up to NYC for a day of shooting in Splashlight studios. Keep reading to see more shots from our travels…

We’ve arrived at part two of Creating the Image, our series showcasing some of Chris’s personal work in a way that we’ve never fully discussed before. Back in January of this year we created some personal conceptual portraiture, with the intention of not only making amazing images, but documenting the entire process from concepting and brainstorming, to shooting, editing, and all the way to the final product.

For our second post, we wanted to go in depth and share what goes on behind the scenes when we’re shooting portraits in the studio. There’s wardrobe to be prepped and styled, hair & makeup to be applied, lights and cameras to be set, checked and tested – all before a single shot is taken. Once we’re all set, there’s a constant process of checking and refining happening on set from all angles. Does the light look right? Is the wardrobe appropriate and styled correctly? Has the makeup smudged or the hair lost its shape? Are we getting the right expressions and actions from the model? All these questions come into play as we’re shooting. Keep reading for a ton of behind the scenes shots & a quick time-lapse of the entire shoot.

It’s been another busy week here in Philly. Spring is absolutely in the air, and as the temperatures warmed up, we had perfect weather for some editorial shooting in the city and across the river in New Jersey.

In a way, the last few days felt a little bit like the calm before the storm. Looking ahead in the calendar, we’ve got a lot of crazy projects coming up including a trip out west next week that I’m sure we’ll be blogging about in some way, shape, or form. I don’t want to get too far ahead though – keep reading for more of what we were up to this week…
