It’s been one hell of a trip. Two countries, nine states, over 10,000 miles and a dozen amazing individuals met. We were honored to be a part of the Inspire Awards for 2012 and we believe that all of the individuals on that list truly deserve the acclaim. I hope that the anecdotes and behind the scenes we’ve shared have expanded upon the stories that our images begin to tell. These people really are trying to make the world a better place, and it was humbling to be a part of what they’re all involved in.

In case you missed any of them – a recap of our stories and the 2012 AARP Inspire Award winners, the Daring Dozen:

 - Jane Goodall
 - Andy Czerkas
 - Senator Daniel Inouye
 - The Arizona Shooting Heroes
 - Irene Zola
 - Hilton Kelley
– Pat Summitt

In early September of this year, we received a call from Caitlin Peters at AARP Magazine to be part of the 2012 Inspire Awards, a year-end collection of inspiring people who have changed the world. Over the course of six weeks this assignment took us from Texas to Arizona, Washington DC, New York City, Chicago, Wisconsin, Miami, Tennessee, and Vancouver. Aside from making photos of the award winners, we were lucky enough to experience their greatness and learn what they had to share with us. Over the next few weeks on the blog we’ll be sharing photos and stories from this adventure.

With thirty six years of winning seasons, over 1000 total wins, and 8 NCAA championship titles, Pat Summitt is one of the most accomplished basketball coaches in History. Despite a diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer’s this year, Summitt perseveres, committed to stay on as coach of the Tennessee Lady Vols for as long as she can. Her abilities as a coach and courage in the face of adversity are amazing. Keep reading for more of our story with the legendary Pat Summitt.

Chris and I arrived in Texas not exactly knowing what to expect. We knew that Hilton was an environmental activist and that Port Arthur was a city down on it’s luck, but the harsh reality didn’t fully set in until our rental truck rolled into town late on the evening prior to our shoot. On the way into Port Arthur, we had to pass through a seemingly endless city of oil refines and chemical plants. As far as the eye could see was industry – smoke stacks and oil derricks dominated the landscape. It was a sight unlike anything we’ve ever experienced. Keep reading for more of the story about the next day and our shoot with Hilton Kelley.

Patricia Maisch, Roger Salzgeber, and Col. Bill Badger are three modern day heroes. In early January 2011 the three were part of a small crowd at a gathering with Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in the parking lot of a Tucson Arizona grocery store. When a gunman began firing at the Congresswoman and randomly into the crowd, these three heroes all took action. Colonel Badger and Roger tackled the assailant while Patricia managed to keep his weapon away. Read more of their story and see more photos and some behind the scenes from our time with these heroes.

When we photographed Senator Inoue, we had an opportunity to meet a man with an amazing story. As the the most senior member of the U.S. Senate and the President Pro-Tempore, Inouye has been serving our country in the government since 1959 – when Hawaii was first established as a state. Before joining the Senate, Inouye was a Captain in WWII, fighting in Italy where he ultimately recede the Medal of Honor for his bravery and sacrifice to his country. In his tenure in the Senate, he was a part of the Watergate Committee and the chair of the Iran-Contra Committee in the 1980′s. We had only ten minutes with the accomplished Senator. When Chris and I flew out to The River Food Pantry in Madison, Wisconsin, we found a group of volunteers with an unequaled and genuine desire to do good and share as much as they can with others. Led by Andy Czerkas and his wife Jenny, their team works to provide around 25,000 lbs of food each week to people in the Madison, Wisconsin area. Not only does Andy and the rest of The River provide food, they do it in a way that’s special – allowing their clients to shop for the items they need and hosting events like a hot meal on Friday nights with live entertainment, tablecloths, silverware and flowers on the table. Chris and I were lucky to spend the day with Andy, keep Reading for more photos & behind the scenes of our day at The River Food Pantry.
