We’re back at it down in Texas, wrapping up our final week of shooting for the massive San Antonio project we’ve been working on since April. This week has seriously flown by, taking us everywhere from vineyards to rodeos, museums to Hindu temples, and back to the studio to shoot some very fiery action.

With dozens of days of shooting and hundreds of images captured already, wrapping up this week feels a bit like putting in the last few pieces to a jigsaw puzzle – wish I could say more but the final results will speak for themselves. For now though, keep reading to see more from our week…

These days, it’s not often that we’re shooting in Philadelphia. Most of our assignments take us all over the place, and when we are back in the city of brotherly love, we enjoy a brief respite to get organized and recharge before we had back out on the road. If our friends at Philadelphia Magazine call, it’s a different story – especially if they call asking us to shoot one of our cities most iconic gossip columnists.

Dan Gross has been Philadelphia’s go-to gossip guy since 2004 and last month we welcomed him to our studio for a day of shooting. Keep reading to see the results, as well as some behind the scenes photos and stories…

chris crisman photographer tech post laptop upgrade

When it comes to upgrading a core piece of technology for the studio, we have two essential criteria we need to think about. First, we shoot a helluva lot of photos. Second, we’re on the road most of the year. With these key factors in mind, we need a laptop that can handle whatever we throw at it. Our macbooks need to be both processing powerhouses and jam packed with as much storage as we can fit.

Monday we might be shooting tethered in studio in NYC and Tuesday we’ll be out in the deserts of New Mexico – we never really know what shoot scenarios to expect so we have to plan for anything. Our newest piece of technology looks like a standard Macbook Pro on the outside, but under the hood is where things get a bit different. Keep reading for the breakdown of our new, ridiculously fast laptop…

We work like crazy. As a studio manager/producer/assistant/blogger life very rarely slows down to the point where I can step back and reflect on it. When it does though, I find myself mulling over aspects of this job that might seem so inconsequential, but for me hold deeper meanings. I’ve decided to write this monthly series on the blog to take a minute and stop, reflect, and write about some of the aspects of being a studio manager that really impact me. These are my studio manager meditations.

Taking out the Trash.

No matter who you are or how long you’ve been in this business, there are still moments when you need to roll up your sleeves and take out the trash. This is not a bad thing, and as someone who’s found himself arms deep in garbage every now and then, I’m in no way complaining. You might even say that I enjoy it.

It’s certainly true that no one is above it, and you call me a hypocrite if you like, but one of the first things that we’ll ask an intern to do is take out the trash. I don’t want to be a malevolent manager or rule the studio with an iron fist – I just feel that in the same way as coiling cables, you can tell a lot about someone from the way they handle a simple task like that. Are they methodical or sloppy, careful or haphazard? Do they really care about the task at hand? No job, however small or trivial is deserved to be half-assed.

This simple and sometimes thoughtless act that could signal the end of the week, wrapping up a good shoot, or just clearing out the junk. Although it’s a repeated task that never seems to go away, the act of taking out the trash and the contents of what you’re throwing away are always unique. In this industry that could be anything from torn and tattered seamless paper, to the remains of a catered lunch, piles and piles of paperwork, or even packaging from the latest and greatest piece of photo gear.

It’s not pleasant to wrestle with an overstuffed bag of trash; folding bending, stuffing, wrangling shut and tying closed. You might get dirty, you might break a sweat, but the act is necessary. You can’t just stop and let the junk pile up around you.

That being said, we’re always taking out the trash. We simply don’t have the time or the space to let it stack up, especially since we’re always growing, always creating and always striving to make the next photo better than the last. As an artist and a creative, you never want to stop improving and creating – the minute you get on your heels is the minute you’re done. So how do you make room for everything? How do you clear up the mental space to make your next photo be your greatest?

You have to take out the trash.

Graphis has recently announced the winners for their Photography Annual 2013 and we are very excited to share that Chris’s portrait of NFL quarterback Michael Vick was awarded the Graphis Platinum award – making the cut of top 10 out of the top 100 selected photos of the year. We are honored to be selected amongst the ranks of some of the best photographers in the business like Craig Cutler. I guess having the initials CC helps, but you’ll have to ask Craig to vouch for that.

You might remember back in 2011 we ran a series of blog posts about our experience shooting Michael Vick – from both Chris’s point of view, and the perspective of Jesse Southerland, a designer working for Philadelphia Magazine. If you haven’t read those accounts of our shoot, they’re worth it. We may have only had three minutes with the NFL superstar, but when you’re prepared it can be just enough time to make an award winning portrait.

It’s Friday and we finally have a minute to catch our breath and look back at the past few days- as usual, it’s been a whirlwind. After a brief stop in Texas, Chris found himself starting off the week in Las Vegas. After only 48 hours (and a few very lucky hands of blackjack later) he moved onward, hopping on a plane to Portland for an editorial shoot, and then back to home base in Philadelphia for the tail end of the week. As for the rest of the Crisman crew, we kept it local these past few days, getting prepared for the next big adventure in the coming weeks. How did it all shake out? Keep reading for a few more shots from this week…
